The Asia Pacific payments market is not just expanding. It is becoming more interconnected, more infrastructure-driven, and more strategically important. A2A is consolidating in some of the region’s most advanced markets and, in India, beginning to evolve into credit infrastructure. AI-mediated commerce is already more advanced in parts of Asia Pacific than in other regions, with China showing how wallet-led AI checkout can scale. Cross-border payment integration is gaining momentum through wallet aggregation, domestic scheme interlinking, and initiatives like Project Nexus. Acceptance is becoming more fragmented and software-led, while B2B modernization is increasingly tied to treasury automation, interoperability, and working-capital solutions. These changes are part of massive market currents we call megatrends.

What Are the Asia Pacific Payments Megatrends for 2026 and beyond?

Our analysis has identified five:

We covered these megatrends in webinars focused on the US, Latin America, and Asia Pacific, looking at the same core forces through the lens of each region’s market dynamics. In the Asia Pacific webinar, the emphasis was on how these trends are unfolding in the world’s most diverse and, in many respects, most advanced payments arena. APAC scores highest of the three regions on PCMI’s own maturity comparison for multi-rail, cross-border fragmentation, and B2B digitization.

But we didn’t just focus on identifying these megatrends. As a specialized advisory firm for payments/financial services companies, PCMI provides decision-making frameworks to help our clients achieve specific business objectives. As such, in the webinar, we framed it as:

Companies can choose to GROW by:

  • Owning the user experience
  • Being the rail
  • Embedding in growth systems
  • Enabling high-value workflows

They can MEASURE:

  • The transaction economics
  • Stakeholders across the ecosystem
  • How to embed themselves within industry workflows
  • Their own performance vis-à-vis customer behaviors and perceptions

They can PROTECT by:

  • Optimizing costs and margins
  • Managing competitive, regulatory and disruptive risk

Below we cover each of the megatrends while keeping the Grow-Measure-Protect framework in mind.

Asia Pacific Payments Megatrend #1: In a Multi-Rail World, the Battle for Micro-Transactions Intensifies

In Asia Pacific (APAC), the multi-rail story is increasingly about how A2A systems evolve once they achieve scale. In the region’s most mature markets, A2A is no longer just replacing cash. It is starting to support broader commerce and, in India especially, moving into credit. That shifts the strategic question from simple adoption toward who captures value as rails expand into higher-ticket, higher-frequency, and more monetizable use cases.

Key factors to consider for Megatrend #1

UPI is already processing about 15 billion transactions per month in India, or roughly 107 transactions per capita, and the deck argues that UPI plus credit could push usage to 20+ transactions per capita per month

UPI-linked credit cards already generate about $12 billion per month, while cardless credit over UPI is still small at roughly $12–24 million per month and less than 1% of UPI transactions

Regulators are shaping the path differently across APAC: Vietnam is pushing interoperable QR at scale, the Philippines is standardizing around InstaPay and PESONet, and Australia is ramping up a bank-built RTP infrastructure

Capture value as A2A evolves into credit

  • Monetize A2A flowsLeverage A2A flows as a customer acquisition and engagment strategy
  • Build the merchant acceptance and GTM strategy needed to support growth

Asia Pacific Payments Megatrend #2: AI Is Becoming the Gateway to Commerce

Asia Pacific is the most advanced agentic commerce region, with China, in particular, showing how AI can reinforce existing wallet and platform ecosystems rather than fragment checkout control. That makes the core issue less about whether AI will matter and more about whether it will strengthen wallet dominance, marketplace power, or new infrastructure layers across different APAC subregions.

Maturity curve of consumer AI-enabled shopping infographic by PCMI showing three phases. Phase 1: AI-assisted discovery, where chatbots help users find products and payments occur on merchant websites. Phase 2: AI-embedded checkout, where consumers complete purchases within an AI interface, payments are processed via embedded PSPs, and users still confirm transactions. Phase 3: autonomous agentic commerce, where AI manages preferences, inventory, and pricing, and transactions happen automatically. A timeline highlights that Asia Pacific is currently in Phase 2, ahead of the rest of Asia, while fully autonomous commerce remains conceptual.

Key factors to consider for Megatrend #2

Asia Pacific is already in Phase 2 of AI-enabled shopping, with AI-embedded checkout further along than in most other regions, while fully autonomous agentic commerce remains conceptual

China is leading this shift: Alipay AI Pay is already processing more than 120 million transactions per week, equal to roughly 1–2% of its total transaction volume

The control point in APAC AI commerce is not uniform: in China, wallets maintain control of checkout; in Southeast Asia, marketplace platforms do; and in both cases AI strengthens existing ecosystem power

Across APAC, the battle for AI commerce is ultimately the battle for checkout, because control of checkout also means control of payment routing, data, and monetization

PCMI payments strategy and insights

Build for where AI commerce is headed

  • Clarify your role as wallets, platforms, and marketplaces compete to control checkout Build AI-enabled products that are attuned to consumer and merchant demand
  • Identify where non-dominant players can still capture value as AI commerce scales

Asia Pacific Payments Megatrend #3: Cross-Border Fragmenting with Growing Intra-Regional Flows

In Asia Pacific, cross-border fragmentation is happening alongside a powerful push toward regional integration. Wallet interoperability, domestic scheme interlinking, and initiatives like Project Nexus are creating the foundations for a more unified digital commerce market across Asia. The strategic question is no longer just how to move money across borders, but how to position for a region in which payment flows may increasingly stay within interoperable Asian networks.

Key aspects to focus on with Megatrend #3

In Asia Pacific, wallet integration, domestic RTP interlinking, and stablecoin-based models are all competing to define the future of cross-border payments

Cross-border wallet aggregation is already live in parts of Asia, with Alipay+ connecting China, Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, Italy, and multiple European countries around travel-related payments

Domestic scheme interlinking is becoming more formalized: the George Town Accord, signed in October 2025, lays the foundation for common cross-border standards spanning QR, A2A, and wallets

Project Nexus has expanded to reach about 17 billion people across member countries, reinforcing the idea that payment integration could turn Asia into a more unified digital commerce market

Build for future cross-border payment flows

  • Prioritize the corridors, rails, and partnerships with the strongest upside
  • Define your role as wallet integration, RTP interlinking, and stablecoins compete
  • Sharpen your cross-border strategy for a more connected intra-Asian market

Asia Pacific Payments Megatrend #4: The Great Acquiring Unbundling

In Asia Pacific, acceptance is not unbundling in the same way it is in the US because, in many markets, it was never truly bundled to begin with. QR codes, wallets, PSPs, orchestrators, and super aggregators already play major roles across the merchant stack. That means the strategic issue is less about the decline of a legacy model and more about which infrastructure services merchants will increasingly rely on as fragmentation deepens and software-led acceptance expands.

Key factors to consider for Megatrend #4

In Asia Pacific, acceptance is not really unbundling because in many markets it was never bundled in the first place

Alternative payment methods already represent more than 50% of total merchant volume across the region, reducing the centrality of traditional card-acquiring models

Heavy QR adoption reduces reliance on hardware, wallets have replaced many acquiring functions, and platforms increasingly control acceptance for SMEs

As payment fragmentation rises, merchant costs can still increase because merchants increasingly pay for checkout software, PSPs, and orchestration infrastructure rather than simple access to rails

PCMI payments strategy and insights

Win in Asia’s fragmented acceptance landscape

  • Choose the ideal partner for pan-regional acceptance coverage while optimizing for cost
  • Become a leader in value-added services to merchants
  • Strategize around payment method acceptance to optimize user and transaction growth

Asia Pacific Payments Megatrend #5: B2B Payment Modernization

In Asia Pacific, B2B payment modernization is broadening beyond digitizing single transactions into a larger effort to fix treasury workflows, disbursements, liquidity visibility, and working-capital constraints. Real-time payments are spreading, but many of the financial operations around them are still slow, fragmented, or manual. That is creating openings in reconciliation, payouts orchestration, interoperability, treasury APIs, and embedded B2B finance.

Key aspects to focus on with Megatrend #5

In Asia Pacific, B2B payment modernization is creating five monetizable layers: reconciliation platforms, payouts orchestration, interoperability infrastructure, treasury APIs and liquidity tools, and embedded B2B finance

The value in APAC B2B payments is shifting away from simple transaction execution and toward infrastructure and workflow layers that help businesses move, reconcile, and optimize funds

Treasury APIs and liquidity tools are emerging as a distinct commercial layer, reflecting growing demand for better treasury visibility, regional liquidity management, and real-time financial coordination

Stablecoins still play only a limited role in APAC B2B modernization, though some PSPs are already exploring stablecoin settlement

PCMI payments strategy and insights

Turn B2B modernization into new revenue layers

  • Focus on the infrastructure and workflow layers where value is shifting
  • Prioritize opportunities across payouts, reconciliation, treasury APIs, and embedded finance
  • Build a clearer view of where to play as APAC B2B payments modernize
LEARN HOW

Taken together, these five developments show that Asia Pacific is setting the pace for the next phase of payments evolution. The region is more mature than the US and Latin America on PCMI’s own maturity scale for multi-rail, cross-border fragmentation, and B2B digitization, while also showing how infrastructure, regulators, and platforms can shape outcomes in very different ways across markets. The winners will not just process transactions more efficiently. They will decide where to own the user experience, where to be the rail, where to embed in growth systems, where to enable high-value workflows, and where to control economics and manage risk as Asia becomes more interconnected.
