US Payments Megatrends for 2026

The US payments market is not just changing. It is fragmenting, layering, and becoming more strategic. New rails are gaining traction in specific use cases. AI is beginning to move commerce into new interfaces. Cross-border infrastructure is evolving across several models. Acquiring is shifting toward software-led ecosystems. And B2B modernization is being driven by Treasury moving from cash management to the C-suite—while becoming a revenue generator.
These changes are part of massive market currents we call “megatrends.”
What Are the US Payments Megatrends for 2026 and beyond?
Our analysis has identified five:
We covered these megatrends in webinars focused on the US, Latin America, and Asia Pacific, looking at the same core forces through the lens of each region’s market dynamics. In the US webinar, the emphasis was on how these trends are unfolding in a highly traditional, yet uniquely innovative leading payments market.
But we didn’t just focus on identifying these megatrends. As a specialized advisory firm for payments/financial services companies, PCMI provides decision-making frameworks to help our clients achieve specific business objectives. As such, in the webinar, we framed it as:

What are 3 major ways that US payments/financial services companies can leverage the megatrends that are unfolding in 2026 and beyond?

Companies can choose to GROW by:
- Owning the user experience
- Being the rail
- Embedding in growth systems
- Enabling high-value workflows
They can MEASURE:
- The transaction economics
- Stakeholders across the ecosystem
- How to embed themselves within industry workflows
- Their own performance vis-à-vis customer behaviors and perceptions
They can PROTECT by:
- Optimizing costs and margins
- Managing competitive, regulatory and disruptive risk
Below we cover each of the megatrends while keeping the Grow-Measure-Protect framework in mind.

US Payments Megatrend #1: In a Multi-Rail World, the Battle for Micro-Transactions Intensifies
In the US, the multi-rail story is increasingly about role definition rather than one payment method replacing another. Cards still dominate overall volume, but A2A and alternative methods are gaining traction in specific use cases across P2P, small business, service-provider payments, and selected commerce environments. The central issue is less about adoption in the abstract and more about where growth is incremental versus where it starts to cannibalize existing volumes.

Key factors to consider for Megatrend #1
Cash’s share of US consumer payment transactions fell from 31% in 2016 and 2017 to 16% in 2023, even as cards remained dominant in overall payment volume
Zelle sent $12 trillion in 2025, up 20% year over year, with 100 million bank and credit union accounts, reinforcing its role in P2P-like and SMB commerce
Venmo and Cash App are no longer just P2P tools; both are building commerce and financial ecosystems that increasingly compete at the POS
Are these the outcomes you want as new rails gain ground?
- Distinguish incremental payment growth from cannibalization risk
- Define where your right to win is strongest across cards, A2A, and wallets
- Develop market entry strategies for emerging merchant verticals

US Payments Megatrend #2: AI Is Becoming the Gateway to Commerce
While ‘agentic commerce’ dominates industry headlines in the US, truly automated commerce is still theory rather than practice. Many consumers use AI to help find products, with actual AI orchestration of purchases still emerging. In fact, OpenAI removed its embedded checkout in March 2026, making AI-embedded checkout even further from a market reality today. That makes the strategic question less about whether AI matters and more about who will control identity, orchestration, and transaction economics as commerce shifts into AI-driven environments.
Key factors to consider for Megatrend #2
In the US, most consumers are still in Phase 1: AI-assisted discovery, while the industry is only beginning to move into Phase 2: AI-embedded checkout; Phase 3 autonomous agentic commerce remains conceptual
AI shopping behavior is already meaningful: 61% of Americans used AI in the past six months, 57% have used it for shopping, and 23% used it in the last month
Native AI commerce is still early: fewer than 5% of Americans have made a native AI-chat purchase, and it accounts for only about 1% of total merchant traffic
The strategic fight is shifting toward who controls checkout, identity, wallet selection, orchestration, and transaction economics as AI becomes a commerce gateway
Get ready for the next phase of AI commerce by:
- Clarifying your role in AI-driven checkout, identity, and orchestration
- Properly mapping the AI-enabled commerce value chain
- Deploying AI-driven shopping while maintaining consumer and merchant trust

US Payments Megatrend #3: Cross-Border Fragmenting with Growing Intra-Regional Flows
Cross-border in the US is becoming more fragmented by corridor, customer type, and infrastructure model. The market is still enormous, but the path forward is no longer defined by one dominant future-state model. Wallet and digital rail approaches, stablecoin initiatives, and domestic RTP-linked models are all competing to shape what comes next, while incumbent infrastructure remains deeply embedded in the market.
Key aspects to focus on with Megatrend #3
The US cross-border market remains enormous, with about $90 billion in outbound P2P remittances and roughly $5 trillion in outbound B2B payments in 2025
Despite growing experimentation with new rails, about 80% of outbound US payments still move via SWIFT, showing how deeply incumbent infrastructure remains embedded
Three models are competing to define the future of US cross-border: wallets and digital rails, stablecoin-based approaches, and domestic RTP-linked models
Card-rail models are happening now, blockchain-based models are developing now, and ISO 20022 and FedNow-linked cross-border approaches remain more speculative
Build a clearer x-border growth roadmap
- Prioritize the corridors and models with the strongest commercial upside
- Define your role across wallets, stablecoins, RTP, and incumbent rails
- Build a phased roadmap for cross-border growth, liquidity, and positioning

US Payments Megatrend #4: The Great Acquiring Unbundling
In the US, the great acquiring unbundling is less about fragmentation at the infrastructure layer and more about a shift in where value accrues. The acquiring backbone remains concentrated, but software-led and verticalized ecosystems are gaining more influence over merchant relationships, pricing power, and embedded distribution. As a result, acquirers and enablers increasingly need to decide where to own the merchant, where to power platforms, and where to accept wholesale positioning.

Key factors to consider for Megatrend #4
The US acquiring landscape has consolidated, not fragmented, with more than $10 trillion in card volume in 2025, about 320 acquirers processing $9 trillion, and 750 payment facilitators processing $4 trillion
Distribution is shifting even as the backbone stays concentrated: 50% of US merchants use SaaS platforms that already include payment processing, and 84% of card-accepting merchants use a SaaS platform
Small businesses remain central to the economics of the market, with roughly two-thirds of acquiring revenue coming from SMBs
BUILD positioning WHERE VALUE is moving
- Map the ISV and merchant aggregator ecosystem
- Sharpen your position as software-led ecosystems gain influence
- Prioritize the distribution and partnerships that can protect economics

US Payments Megatrend #5: B2B Payment Modernization
In the US, B2B payment modernization is broadening from transaction digitization into treasury transformation, workflow enablement, and capital efficiency. The opportunity is no longer just to move money faster: it’s about helping corporates improve liquidity, supplier enablement, working capital, and the strategic value they extract from treasury operations. That is why B2B modernization is increasingly tied to APIs, virtual cards, real-time data, and value-added treasury services.
Key aspects to focus on with Megatrend #5
US B2B payments have shifted sharply toward digitization: 68% are now digital through ACH, card, and wire, versus 50% check and cash in 2019
Virtual cards are leading US commercial card growth, with spend rising to about $662 billion in 2025, well ahead of plastic corporate and purchasing cards
Treasury is becoming more strategic inside US corporations: more than 80% of treasurers say their KPIs have expanded in scope, and 50% to 75% now regularly join C-suite strategic discussions
Treasury API adoption is accelerating, with 74% expected to be using APIs in treasury by 2026, as treasury shifts from back-office function to value generator
Turn B2B modernization into revenue
- Enable legacy FIs and corporations to compete in the digital economy
- Prioritize treasury, virtual card, and API opportunities with real commercial upside
- Build supplier enablement and monetization strategies around actual market demand

Taken together, these five developments show that the US payments market is becoming more layered, more intelligent, and more fragmented. The winners will not simply process transactions more efficiently. They will decide where to own the user experience, where to be the rail, where to embed in growth systems, where to enable high-value workflows, and where to control economics and manage risk as the market keeps evolving.
